Worth knowing before you paste: these are Unicode characters, not fonts. Screen readers read them out as gibberish or skip them, they can't be searched, and a few older phones show empty boxes instead of letters. Great for a bio or a username; not for anything that has to be read by everyone.
Unicode lets you attach accent marks to a character: one for a French é, another for a Spanish ñ. It does not limit how many you can attach. Zalgo text exploits that by stacking dozens of marks on each letter — some drawn above, some below, some struck through the middle — until the character disappears under them.
The marks here are picked by a seeded generator rather than at random, which means the same text always produces the same glitch. That is deliberate: it keeps the preview stable while you type instead of reshuffling on every keystroke, and it means a result you liked is reproducible.
Light intensity adds one mark above and one below, which reads as a slightly unsettling wobble. Medium is the classic corrupted look. Heavy stacks seven marks in each direction and will overlap the lines above and below wherever it is pasted.
Discord is zalgo's natural home, and it renders there faithfully. It also works in WhatsApp messages, Instagram captions, and most comment fields. Heavy zalgo is another matter: some apps strip excess combining marks, some truncate the string, and a few refuse to render it at all and show replacement boxes instead.
Be aware that heavy glitch text is disruptive by design — it overlaps neighbouring messages and can make a chat hard to read for everyone in it. Plenty of communities treat it as spam and moderate it accordingly. The character count also explodes: a ten-letter word at heavy intensity is well over a hundred and fifty code points, which alone will breach some input limits.
For anything that has to be read rather than felt, one of the plain font styles is the better choice.

Each app decides how many combining marks to draw and where. Some render every mark, some cap the stack, and some strip them entirely — which is why the same string can look dramatic in Discord and almost normal elsewhere.
It's ordinary Unicode text and can't harm a device, but heavy glitch text overlaps other messages and many communities moderate it as spam. It's also very long in character terms, so some fields will reject it.
Almost everyone will. These are standard Unicode characters supported by Android, iPhone, Windows, and Mac, so they travel with the text itself rather than depending on a font being installed. The exceptions are older or budget phones, which show an empty box for characters they don't have, and screen readers, which read styled letters out as gibberish or skip them entirely. Use them for names, bios, and statuses — not for information someone actually needs to read.
