Worth knowing before you paste: these are Unicode characters, not fonts. Screen readers read them out as gibberish or skip them, they can't be searched, and a few older phones show empty boxes instead of letters. Great for a bio or a username; not for anything that has to be read by everyone.
WhatsApp is the clearest example of the gap this fills: it supports bold, italic, strikethrough, and monospace, but has never supported underline in any form. Instagram bios, TikTok names, and most username fields have no formatting at all. Underlining anything in those places means putting the line into the characters themselves.
Each letter here is followed by a combining low line, which draws underneath the character before it. Strung together they form what looks like one continuous rule under the phrase. Double underline uses a doubled version of the same mark; wavy uses a tilde below; the overline variant draws the line above the text instead.
Underline carries a strong convention on screens: it means a link. Underlining a line of a bio can read as a broken hyperlink rather than emphasis, and on some apps a genuinely tappable link sitting next to it becomes ambiguous. Bold usually communicates emphasis more clearly, with none of the confusion.
There is also a rendering caveat specific to underlines. Combining marks are positioned by the font, and fonts disagree about where a low line sits relative to a descender — the tail of a g, j, p, q, or y. On some devices the line collides with the descender and looks smudged. If your text is full of those letters, check it on the device that matters before you commit.
As with every combining style, the character count roughly doubles and screen readers announce it poorly. Short lines only.
